Last month, I took my car to the tire shop to have a leak fixed and my tires rotated. The service agent then called me back to my car to show me that the inside treads of both of my front tires were completely worn. I had no idea of this and had to replace both tires and get an alignment. The mechanic said that the alignment was off about a quarter of an inch.
That really made me think of how we humans can have the same type of alignment problem and not realize it. Because we are “off” only a quarter inch and we are not paying attention to our tread (our feelings), we do not know how far out of balance we are until our tires blow (physical manifestation).
That’s why it is so important to keep checking our tread (feelings) so that we know if we are still in alignment.
After I had the car fixed, I was looking at the road so carefully because I did not want to hit a pothole and have the car go out of alignment again. Being fixated on the road gave me no opportunity to see the big picture around me. Eventually, I settled down to a more middle of the road approach of avoiding potholes.
You don’t have to “fix” every negative thought because one thought will not take you out of alignment. It is the cumulative effect of a chronic pattern of negative thoughts that will mis-align you. If you try to change every thought, you will miss wonderful things that are happening around you. The key is to tune into the way you feel (check the treads on the tires) often. When you see the treads begin to wear, it’s time to rebalance the wheels.
Nice mindful story, simplicity at its best!
